For our magazine, when assigned the task to decide on our genre, my group decided they wanted to pick a genre that stands out from all the rest and that is unique. Therefore in order to stand out we chose Funky House. By doing this we gave ourselves a challenge different to everyone else, as most people were doing R'n'B and already had ideas from existing products. We on the other hand had to start from scratch and come up with our own ideas as it has never been done before.
I used forms and conventions to relate to real magazines covers such as:
Masthead (also know as the main title): 'D'FUNK' at the top of the page, its short and catchy so that readers will remember it, in a contrasting colour to the background.
Graphics: To highlight Promotional offers, such as a cheaper price, and free giveaways, to make the magazine more appealing to the reader.
Central figure: A young girl, who represents what the magazine is all about.
Main cover line: Which is the website address. This gives the reader the information they need, and shows them were they can get more on the magazine.
Bar code: I used a bar code, issue number and date, to make the cover more like a magazine
Cover lines: I used cover lines, to show the readers a bit about what’s inside. This makes the reader want to buy the magazine.
Our target audience, was teenagers, and music lovers. This was because, its generally people who are under the age of 20 that are into funky house, so we decided on this audience because we felt they were the people who best fit the criteria, although it doesn’t have to be within the expected social group.
To fit our criteria, a shot a young girl in funky clothes, to pose as a new and upcoming artist as she appealed to the genre of music. When i created my front cover, i used a bright background, that contrasted with my picture, that made it very eye-catching and bright. The colours and other small print and pictures on my cover, were also bright
and eye catching so that they matched our theme of neon colours.
Using the colleges Canon digital cameras, we shot our pictures during our photo shoot. When we finished shooting we were able to use the excellent standard Apple Mac computers. We used Photoshop CS3, to edit our magazine, which made it editing easy and professional for us. We were also given a tutorial in Photoshop to help us on our way, which was very useful for those who were not familiar with Mac's and Photoshop. Therefore from making this magazine I have not only learnt how to use cameras and shooting, but also the use of Mac's and Photoshop, which will defiantly come in handy in the future.
If i was to create another magazine cover, i would plan my background and cover first before shooting the picture, so that it would be easier for me to edit the cover, as we done it the other way round. Something’s such as the background colour had to be changed from what I originally thought would work. I would take a lot more time to design the magazine to make it seem a lot more professional.
Overall, i am happy with the whole project, as it was our first i am happy with what me and my group produced. I am also pleased with what i learnt from the experience.

D' Funk Music Mag Evaluation
My Music Magazine Evaluation
For our magazine we had to chose a genre, in my group we decided to do funky house this is because we wanted it to be different and attract peoples attention. We wanted people to walk into a shop and straight away notice our magazine and buy it. Also we knew that everyone else in our class was going to pick hip hop or RnB. I think choosing funky house made it more challenging because no one else picked that idea and it was knew to everyone. We chose bright neon colours to fit our funky house theme.
The target audience for our magazine cover was aimed at teenagers mainly under 21s. We chose this type of audience because these days it is the young teenagers who are interested and buy funky house music. We mainly wanted it to be for anyone who has a passion for funky house music and want to read about the new upcoming tunes. So that they can know what the latest funky clothes to buy and what raves/parties they can go to during the summer time.
My music magazine doesnt repersent a certain social group but it is for everyone and anyone to read. On the front cover of my magazine i chose a young black boy this is because he is wearing funky clothes and glasses. The clothes he is wearing is in trend and everyone loves a pair of cool glasses so i tjought it worked really well. The reason why i chose him over a celebrity or a star is because i want people to feel that anyone can be like them. The boy on the fromt cover is holiding a phone to take the picture and is posing with two fingers. Originally the phone in the picture wasn't suppose to be there but i couldnt crop it out so i had to make use of it. The shot i used is a medium shot, just of the waist and above. I used this because it is better for the magazine and you can see what he is wearing. There isnt a location of my picture but it has a bright neon purple background which contrasts with his pink t shirt.
My music magazine develops or challenges forms and conventions of real magazines this is because it uses several conventions. First of all, the mast head which is also known as the main title. In my magazine my mast head was called D’Funk which was bright yellow to catch the readers attention and to stand out from the rest.I created my magazine like this so it was very unique and versatile. I used a graphic so it can highlight a special offer this helped because the readers would instantly notice it and would want to buy it. The main cover image of my magazine was a teenage young boy who dressed really funky. In the image he is directly looking at the audience I think this is really engaging to the readers this is because it is as if he is looking directly at them. I used this because I thought it fitted the funky house genre. The main cover line on my page is ‘Introducing the newest funky magazine’ the font is really big this is because it is the biggest and main story of the magazine. On my magazine I have a lot of cover lines which is on the left hand side of the page. At the bottom of the magazine I have a bar code, price and a issue date.
The D'funk magazine also has special offers where you can win a free funky house cd inside the magazine. I chose to do this because i thought it would be a really good idea to give the audience something exciting and differen to listen to. By the cd being free alot more people would want it and actually go out and buy our magazine. For our magazine each issue has the same fonts but has a different theme or layout. We came up with the word D' funk because alot of teenagers these days use slang and we thought it directly appeals to them. The word D'funk is another way of saying the funk, it is a short, easy and catchy way of saying it. I think it is very cool and different because of the way you spell it. Our catch phrase was where did d'funk go or d'funks back.
The type of media institution that might distrubute my magazine cover is probably an independent publisher. I would say this because it is different form the rest and has just came out so it is not known yet. They would might to get their hands on it first compared to the rest. Whereas if it was emap being the best institution for magazines everyone will know about it and will be a success. Due to the fact that most of the top magazines are distrubuted by them.
Technology these days made the making of our magazine very easy and effortless. This is because we had the use of the Apple mac computers and Photoshop. It helped us to construct and see the final version of the magazine. These great facilities made it quick and easy to access and change our magazine whenever we wanted to.
From making the magazine, I have learnt how to use the Apple Macs Computer. At first i found it really challenging because i had never used one before but after a while i got used to it and it became much more easier. This made it more exciting and meant i could get more of my magazine done.During the process i also learnt how to use photoshop which i had never used before but because people in my group were well experienced at it they helped me along the way. By using photoshop i managed to learn and gain new skills such as cropping, fonts, inserting pictures, different fonts, cutting and adding in pictures. I think this helped alot because i became much more focused and relaxed and i produced a really good front cover. In additon next time i can use my skills and help other people in my group.
If i was to make another front cover of a magazine, Next time i would take more time to plan what is actually going to be on the magazine. I would have a rough idea or sketch in my head of how i would like it to be and look like. This would make it much more easy and save alot of time.
I think it is very important to know about the genre you are trying to sell, so i would do more research about the funky house genre and put more attractions on my magazine. Also i would maybe change the picture of the front cover of my magazine this is because it was a last minute thing and i think putting more time and thought into it, i could of come up with something more attractive and appealing to the readers. Lastly i would change the genre of the magazine this is because it was the hardest to do and no one knew much about it. Maybe if we had done a different genre like hip hop or pop everyone could of connected to it and use the best of thier ability. This would of made the magazine much easier, appealing and successful.
Overall, I think my front cover came out to be really good and it captured the funky house theme and should appeal to alot of readers.

In my magazine cover, I created a basic but unique cover to attract my target audience. My group chose a different style of a music genre; the genre our group used is Funky House genre. The reason why our group did not use a typical music genre such as RNB or hip-hop is because we wanted to get attention and make our magazine cover stand out on the shelve. The forms and conventions that I have used to relate to a real magazines covers is, I have used:

The reason why our group did not use a typical music genre such as RNB or hip-hop is because we wanted to get attention and make our magazine cover stand out on the shelve. The forms and conventions that I have used to relate to a real magazines covers is, I have used:
Promotion offers – so our target audiences feel awarded for reading my magazine cover therefore hopefully buy the product more often and have customer loyalty.
Poses- I have used this relaxed and friendly pose to welcome our target audiences, to this new issue as it is issue number one. My main cover image is looking directly to at the camera to catch target audiences eyes and attract the reader’s attention to the magazine.
Main sell line- I have used a short catchy main sell line so my audience understands what magazine is about and at the same time the genre of this magazine cover. I have located my main central figure in a particular way so his hands movement required to links to the main sell line and connects to the genre of the magazine.
Graphics- I have used graphics on my magazine e.g. highlight on the special offer to attract consumer’s eyes and stand out to our customers.
Central figure- I have put into my magazine cover a simple young man that is dressed the type of genre (bright purple jacket with an organ cartoon picture) for our cover to make the reader feel part and be together with the magazine.
Masthead- D’ funk in bright blue to stand out and feats with our genre. Short and catchy to remember the masthead as this issue is only out every month. I have used this bright neon colour (blue) because it emphasises the genre.
My magazine cover represents funky house social groups as lively and noise social groups because of the bright colours and the central figure is spreading his arms that emphasises loud and nose young people. The target audience for my magazine cover is teenagers or to be specific, less than 25 years of age as this age would be interested to this type of genre. I have chosen this specific target age because mostly young people are in bright neon colours and they are fanatic fans of funky house music therefore it would be most suitable to aim my magazine at this target audience.
Personally, the media institution that might distribute my magazine cover is the music channels such as channel u, urban because these are the channels that my target audience watches therefore it would be most suitable to a distribute in these media institutes. I have chosen the media institutes because it would reach to a wider range of audience.
Our magazine cover attracts and addresses the target audience in a way that it is suitable. I do this by, example interviewing the most popular funky house artists so by doing this, it would attract our audience and that will make them read on. I finally address them by using a simple young man that looks like a typical funky house addict, which should make them feel part of this magazine. I address and/or attract my target audience in this particular way because I want to build an interest in our magazine.
In this process of creating this front magazine cover, I have learnt to use many programs such as Mac, Photoshop and particular programmes like adobe to edit pictures that meant we could put pictures into other picture to make it look like a surreal picture. I have also learnt that anyone could take a picture any were and use the magic tool to take off the background and put anther background depending on the genre of your magazine cover. I have become skilled in blogging because I never knew that you could insert pictures into your blog and I have done blogging many of times in media that made me experienced.
If would to make another magazine cover I would firstly find a neon background because it will help to design the cover in a simple way so there’s no need to find corresponding colour with the main cover image. In my point of view, the neon background would attract my target audiences tremendously because a neon colours is a large piece of funky house genre. Secondly, I would spend more time to find and put together a real main image or/and central figure, using an enormous amount of neon colours to create an actual bond to the funky house lovers. By doing, this formation design our target will feel attracted and part of the magazine and that should make them buy the magazine based on the front cover.

D'Funk Mag Evaluation
Magazine Evaluation
My Magazine cover is not like a typical magazine cover or genre. My group chose an different style of an music genre, we chose a Funky House genre. The reason we didn't want to be like every other music magazine out there we wanted to stand out and catch the readers attentions and make them want to read our magazine. We choose very bright vibrant colours as a way to indicate the funky theme.
The layout of my magazine is like a typical magazine layout just with a bit more funkier style, it has the normal conventions of a magazine such as the masthead, main image, bar code, price, month issue, freebie, cover lines our magazine also has a slogan and a strap line. The colour of my magazine using a range of neon colours to catch the readers attention. D'funk also offers the promotion of a free funky CD to make the reader want to buy the magazine to get the CD. Our magazine throughout the issues uses the same fonts but have a different theme and layout.
D'funk audiences is for people who just enjoy funky house music and would want to read about all the new upcoming tunes and the new artist. But if i had to give my magazine a particular age i would say for teens 16+, who want to go out to the latest funky raves and have a good time and also no what the latest funky outfits our about.
We attracted our audience to our magazine ; by our unique name D'FUNK,also by our bright colours, the cover star was just your ordinary girl in a funky type of fashion she had on a mixed of colours such as green, blue, pink, yellow, zebra print and white. The content of my magazine consist of meeting the new funky group, an interview with a funky DJ also a range of the funky shoes that we have in stall for this season. The language we used was informal language as we was trying to catch readers of our age group. We also attracted the audience as there is not another funky house magazine on the scene. The name of our magazine D'Funk is unique and this is slang and appeals more to our audience because they are young and are used to this type of writing. But the D'Funk stands for The Funk symbolises The Funky magazine.
My music magazine cover doesn't represent a typical social group but it represent anyone who really likes funky music and is up for having party's and going out and enjoying the funky scene. I choose a girl of around 16 to do the front cover. She is doing a funny face and has her tongue poked out as she turned to the camera. She also have a hand on her hips This shot is a long short as it gets the main image in plus the rest of her outside background. She has on a range of colours indicating that she has a good sense for funky fashion and likes to be outrageous and try different things and experiment like we did with our magazine. The location of this picture is outside in the street, it is not in typical funky background, just on a normal day with normal surroundings but her outfit stands out.
During my making of the magazine i have learnt how to use the Apple Mac to a good standard, this made it more relaxing for me to make the magazine as it was easy to use. This meant that i could be able to do more work and enjoy want i was doing. I also learnt how to use photo shop on the Macs at first i found it a bit difficult but with help from my group members i was able to make a good front cover for my magazine. I was able to use a range of skills such as using all different fonts, cropping and adding in pictures. Also being able to experiment with many things on the photo shop and see if was good for my magazine. After i had don't this i was able to relax and help other members in my group with working with photo shop.
If i was to create another magazine front cover, i would do a lot more planning for my magazine and establish what i particular wanted to go on my front cover to make it unique and stand out. I would also do more research into the funky house genre so i could have a lot more things to put on the front of my magazine to attract my readers. I would maybe change the photograph to give my magazine a different sort of meaning. Funky house was a particular hard genre to work with, so i might of change the genre but i liked the challenge so to me it was a good genre and our magazine wasn't like the rest it stood out, it was unique.
Out of the whole experiences, i enjoyed the making of our D'Funk magazine it was a great experience and i learnt a lot of new techniques.

D'FUNK MAG EVALUATION
Magazine Evaluation
My magazine cover displays a different type of approach to magazine covers, because of its unique genre. D'FUNK is based on the funky house genre of music, an unusual choice for a magazine but my group wanted the uniqueness, to be different from the other magazines. The vibrant colours of our magazines already displays what our magazine is about, other than the usual magazines you would have to actually pick it up and read parts of it to understand what it’s about, but ours with our distinctive range of colours makes it easier for the consumer to know what it’s about.
The colours of our magazines represent the genre of the magazine; people would generalize the distinctive choice of colours for our magazines with the music genre. The person on the front of my magazine was chosen because it appeals more to the genre of the music, displaying a mixture of colours to represent the different types of the funky house genres. In addition, the magazine reflects the target audience, you can straight away pick up that this magazine is targeted for the mid teens to mid twenty’s because of the colours shown on the front of the magazine and also the person put at the front. The position of the person placed on the magazine; a medium shot, which shows the person with his headphones on his head and his hands on his headphones. Already indicates the social group because of the stance of the person; it kind of shows that he’s in a party and since people think that mostly teenagers or young adults party a lot, it shows who the social group is.
The audience of my of magazine doesn’t necessarily have to be within the expected social group, we tend to aim it at people who party a lot because of the genre, funky house music is normally played in parties and rarely anywhere else, so that’s our audience. The way we addressed our audience, is by using words that they understood, well informal language, take our magazine mass head for instance; D’FUNK this is slang and appeals more to our audience because they are young and are used to the slang term, D’FUNK standing for The FUNK. Also the content of the magazine addresses the audience a lot, supplying interviews with certain artists, answering questions that haven’t been answered before; to let the readers know why funky house genre is unique and at its best.
The technology available to us nower days, has made designing this magazine cover very effortless for me and my group. The programmes that was available to us like Photoshop CS3, made creating, editing and all other forms of designing quick, simple and enjoyable to do for us. Furthermore with the availability of the Apple Mac’s which Photoshop runs smoothly on and is easier to use on, made our work even easier and relaxing for me and my group. For me I find it very easy to use Photoshop on a Mac, because Photoshop was intended to be on Mac’s so that’s why its user friendly on Mac’s, and more complex on Mac’s.
If I were to create the magazine cover, again I would take more time planning and designing what the magazine is going to be about, and what it will contain. When I was doing my first magazine, I really didn’t get that much time to plan out what I was going to do with the magazine, but I still used my time effectively and produced a good magazine cover. The second thing I would do differently is research more into the genre of the magazine, because the genre of the magazine I done was actually new to me; so I really didn’t know what to expect on magazines that have that genre, next time I should research more on the genre it will be about. I’ve now realised that maybe choosing another genre, I might have been more effective on what was going to be on it. The third thing I would of done differently is taken pictures which actually relate more to the genre and audience, I realised that the picture of the person on the front of my magazine really doesn’t appeal to the audience, it would of been better if there was a famous funky house artist to appeal more to the audience.
Lastly, the thing I would have changed is the genre of the magazine; the genre picked was not necessary because not everyone in my group knew about the genre or not that much people are into that specific genre. We should of picked a genre we knew we could of tackled well, but we wanted to be different from the other genre’s, maybe next time we can pick a more common genre but the way we go about designing the magazine is where our uniqueness can come in.

D'FUNK PHOTO SHOOT
Today me and my group had to go out and about taking pictures which suit our magazine front cover. Too bad that it was raining today, we suffered as we were out on angel searching for someone to take pictures of, it was difficult finding someone but we found a few who suited us. Most of us got soaked by the rain because of lack of coats, not me by the way i came prepared today.
The rain limited our search time; because most people can't be bothered to be standing in the rain waiting for their pictures to be taken. We had to make some technical choices about the type of camera angles we wanted for example, medium close up we had to use this for when we were shooting people, other angles we used are close up and long shot. Overall we got some amazing picture todays, maybe not the ones most needed those ones are going to be taken at another day by my colleague's. Luckily most of us were in today as it is Eid, but we got some of the work needed done today. So stay tuned for further blogging.
D'FUNK PHOTO SHOOT
'D' Funk Day Out'
Today in our lesson, we had a photo shoot.
This is where we went out and took pictures for our magazine. We used a digital camera.
As our genre is 'Funky House' we took pictures of people with bright colours and funky things.
We took pictures of our general public who fitted our genre, such as people with bright trainers and quirky clothing.
The reason we took pictures of these people because they would fit our target audience of our magazine.
Today, wasn't a good day to go out, as it was raining and loads of people didn't want to stop in the rain to take pictures.
this caused most of our team to get wet and wanting to go back to base therefore our photo shoot couldn't be completed.
Luckily, most of our group are taking pictures at home, so they can have the affect of the magazine that they would wish to..
The technical decision that we made were a we took a close-up picture of bright trainers this was to emphasise the colour of his bright trainers.
We also took a long shot of the two boys as we like what they had on and there bright trainers stood out.
Our group also took picture of two people in Angel,Islington with cool jumpers which fitted our genre, this image was a medium shot.
We also took pictures of omarr, he had headphones on looking as he was listening to some really good funky music. We took several pictures of him such as close-ups,medium shots and a long shot.
Our group has decided that we our going to alter this picture and change the colour of his outfit to fit in with our magazine.
The final picture we took was of our fellow group member, Ava on a bright orange mo ped that we found outside of a building. This was a long shot as we wanted to get Ava plus the bike.
So all and all this was an ok day. look forward to writing soon xoxo
